Your cell phone chimes — a text message has come in. It bears your bank’s name and has some disturbing news. One of your accounts has been frozen. Please call us at the following number to clear this up, urges the message.

You’ve just been “smished”.

Smishing texts are the newest way scam artists can gain personal info.

An offshoot of “phishing”

Emails that try to trick you into disclosing personal or financial information — smishing is named for the SMS (short message service) technology used to send text messages. (There’s even another variation, “vishing.” Instead of a text message, you get a call with a recorded voice.)

As more people have gotten wise to computer-based scams, scammers are increasingly targeting cellphones. Their users are three times more likely to fall for fake messages than computer users, according to online security firm Trusteer, iPhone users are the most vulnerable.

When you call the number the text gives you for your bank, you’re actually connecting to the scammers, who ask for your account number, PIN, Social Security number – the raw material of identity theft.

Bogus bank alerts…

Bogus bank alerts lead in smishing attacks. But you may also get texts promising a free laptop, mortgage assistance or lottery winnings. A message may just say, “Short on cash? Reply here!” One new come-on is a supposed free security app to get you to click on a link that in fact downloads identity-stealing software to your phone.

The Federal Trade Commission recently moved against a firm that was allegedly offering phony government loans by text. Five and a half million text messages were sent to cell phones in just 40 days — roughly 85 per minute, according to the commission. This firm also is alleged to have sold the numbers of people who replied asking to be removed from the list.

So here’s your defense:

• Don’t reply. Even sending a “remove” or “stop” response to a smishing text tells scammers that your number is active, meaning you may get more messages.
• Don’t click on links in texts sent to you by unknown parties.
• Block suspicious numbers. Your cell phone provider may be able to block numbers where the texts and calls originate.
• Your bank is texting you? Look up its number yourself — don’t trust the one provided in the text — and call.
• Don’t store credit card and account login information in emails or notes on the phone.
• Set your phone to time out and lock after a short period. If it’s stolen, thieves won’t get personal information.
• Install updates. When you receive a bona fide notification of an upgrade to your phone’s software, install it immediately. If you doubt the message is legitimate, call your cell or app provider.

If you worry about when the next anxiety or panic attack may come on, I have good news for you. I use to spend countless hours and days in a state of low level anxiety wondering when something might happen that would trigger an attack…and wishing I could do something to stop it.

What was most worrisome was the apprehension that I experienced every morning when I started my car. I had a severe panic attack while driving one Saturday afternoon and just barely was able to pull over to the side of the street and call my wife fro help. What would happen I fretted, if an attack came on and I was driving on a major freeway in Los Angeles where we live. I was certain that if one did, it might be a disaster.

The idea of meditating to control or end panic and anxiety attacks was introduced to me by a holistic practitioner who suggested that I learn how to mediate the right way and use it as a tool on a daily basis, and especially prior to driving, as a way to stop the onset of an attack.

Panic Attacks…

My panic attacks were such an awful experience that I was willing to try almost anything. Had the practitioner suggested I eat pebbles and dance on my head I would have given it a try. Anything was better than having another attack…especially while driving a car!

I took the advice to heart…

I took the advice to heart, learned to mediate the right way and put it to work as a “tool”, as suggested. Since incorporating this approach into my daily routine I am happy to say that I have not experienced another anxiety attack nor panic attack while driving. It’s simple and ever so calming and peaceful.

Learning how to deal with the stress inherent in everyday life via meditation may help you experience an inner peace and relief for the symptoms triggering an anxiety or panic attack.

Done regularly, you can eliminate negative thoughts and replace them with positive, serene images. This may help you lessen or eliminate the effects of negative stress which produce anxiety and panic attacks. •Start for fifteen minutes and gradually increase your meditation time.

Take some time and incorporate meditation into your daily routine. It’s very powerful once harnessed and the benefits from this simple and almost ancient therapy is one that can help you stop your panic and anxiety attacks once and for all.

Interim BP Claims were Shelved

BP Claims that were promised to come first , in the form of Interim Claims, were in essence shelved in favor of getting Quick Pays paid by the GCCF. BP and the GCCF are on the ropes, after over a year since the Oil Spill the truth is coming out. Whether it was the report about BP being guilty for all of its carelessness being released last week, or the audit that is coming up for the GCCF, the news is not going to be good.
